Gulf Coast Vision Center 40th Anniversary

Yes, it's been 40 years that Gulf Coast Vision has been in business. Gulf Coast Vision Center opened its doors in the Fall of 1972. The practice was a small office on Hood Drive in Ensley. Dr. Horace Linder, a native of Alabama and Dr. Richard Griffin, a native of Florida started this practice together after attending optometry school together at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. 

Their goal was to build a practice based on service. As the practice grew they reached out to communities such as Century and Milton with additional locations. Eventually, the need for a larger facility became necessary so in 1986 they opened a 5000sq.ft. office on 9 Mile Road. This facility would be state of the art with a full surfacing lab that allowed them to make glasses for their patients in the same day. 

 

They continued to be active in the community and provide excellent service until 2005. However, after 33 years of practicing they chose to retire and turn the practice over to Dr. Douglas Reynolds. Recognizing and appreciating the level of individual care provided in the past it was Dr. Reynolds goal to continue with that same level of care. He has always chosen to have highly trained individuals be part of the practice and very proud of the care they provide each and every patient.

 

As a way of saying thank you to their patients, Gulf Coast Vision Center is having a celebration the entire week beginning October 22nd. At both locations they will be having discounts, specials and giveaways. So make sure and stop by either location during this week to check out their specials.

Controlling Humidity - You really want it in your home!

Sixty years ago most homes in America didn't have air conditioning. But today, and especially in Florida, one can't live without it. The mass migration of Americans South into the warmer climates has a great deal to do with the fact that air conditioning has become common. Florida is certainly one of the greatest benefactors of that migration. It wouldn't be a surprise to note a great deal of Florida's economy relies on having air conditioning. But as power bills go up with the cost of electricity, people look to alternatives. And there is an alternative, humidity control.

                                                                                Most people dont realize it but it's not temperature that makes them feel hot and sticky. It's humidity. Managing humidity is a much simpler and more efficient way to feel cool. And not only that, controlling humidity has many more benefits.

 In Pensacola humidity ranges from about 90-95% in the morning to 50-60% in the afternoon. When humidity is high, we feel hot and sticky because our perspiration doesn't evaporate, so we feel hot even if the temperature is relatively low.  Unfortunately, most air conditioners are controlled by temperature. Which means if it is cool and humid we feel hot but the A/C isn't going to turn on. Conversely, in the afternoon, when the humidity is much more livable, the temperature is high, the A/C continues to run and actually over shoots... lowering humidity further... below ideal conditions.

One of the most amazing things about controlling humidity is the impact on reducing airborne hazards such as bacteria, viruses, allergens and even chemical compounds. Children are certainly one of the most vulnerable. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics two/thirds of children's health problems are related to indoor air quality. The EPA states "Air quality is the single most important health concern in the United States". Simply controlling the humidity is the most effective solutions.

Controling humidity also has another fabulous benefit. It allows occupants to raise the set temperature in their home and still feel cool. Gulf Power states that each degree one raises the set temperature equates to a 6% savings to the overall energy consumption for cooling. And being that in our area 60% of our electric bill is devoted to heating and cooling that savings can be substantial.

                                                                                Heating and Air Conditioning isn't just a product or service. It's an investment. A system that does the most efficient job of controlling humidity costs more but in terms of long term value it represents great value. Not to mention the benefits to health and comfort.

When it's time to consider repairing or replacing your heating and air conditioning system. Do Not make a decision without talking to Aire Value about the value of humidity control. It just might be the opportunity to completely change the quality of life you experience inside your home.

Full Moon on the Beach Gathering

This Friday evening , May 4th, Pensacola Biz Net members, friends and family are going to gather on the beach to enjoy the scenery and have one more opportunity to get to know each other in the relaxed atmosphere of the best Pensacola Beach has to offer.

Bring some chairs, a blanket, or a towel, a cooler, some snacks, family, friends if you'd like and join us on the beach. It's the first parking lot going East past Portofino.6:30pm Map You can bring kids too but no glass bottles or dogs.

One more note of interest. This month's full moon is actually a Perigee Moon which means it's the biggest and brightest of the year 14% larger and 30% brighter. Werewolfs won't be able to resist!

We've been busy!

In the past month Pensacola Biz Net took two trips to the field. One, to the Escambia Emergency Center and second, Pensacola's new baseball park downtown. We took some great pictures and as soon as I get them they will be posted here. Keep an eye out for them!

One of the benefits of Pensacola Biz Net is getting to know the people in the community that make a difference. Our Next Field Trip - Escambia Country Emergency Management Center

March 29th 2012. We will be touring Escambia County's Emergency Management Operations Center located 6575 North W St. Be sure to let us know your coming. It should be an interesting visit.

We will be meeting there instead of Cordova Lanes at 7:45am. The tour starts at 8am.

Planning, continuous training and teamwork have been the key to a quick response and successful recovery from the many disasters that have impacted our community.
The Escambia County Disaster TEAM is made up of more than 90 agencies and has been recognized regionally and statewide for cooperation and leadership during emergencies and disasters.

Escambia County has been designated a “Storm Ready” Community every year since 2001 by the National Weather Service.

Cronimet to locate manufacturing facility in Pensacola

A recent article in the PNJ reports a stainless steel recycler will be opening up a facility in Pensacola later this year. It should result in at least 15 new full time positions and a $5 million impact to the local economy over the next 5 years. This story also highlights the local Chamber's Vision 2015 Plan to create 3,000 new high paying jobs in the area by 2015.

PNJ Article Sept.1, 2011

Pennsylvania-based stainless steel scrap recycler Cronimet said today it plans locate a manufacturing facility in Pensacola starting in early November. The announcement was made today by Pensacola Bay Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Jim Hizer and chamber Chairman Collier Merrill. Cronimet's expansion plans will result in the creation of 15 fifteen manufacturing and administrative jobs in the Pensacola Bay area.

Hizer said Cronimet’s capital investment and jobs created will result in a $5 million impact to the Pensacola Bay area over the course of the first five years. This is the first location for Cronimet in the state of Florida. "We're thrilled for Cronimet to join the Pensacola community," Merrill said. "The creation of these specialized jobs will further enhance opportunities for Pensacola residents and potentially bring additional business to our area." read more here

County Commissioner Wilson Robertson to speak to Biz Net

Mark your calenders for Thursday September 29th!

We're extremely lucky to have another fabulous guest speaker. Escambia County Commissioner Wilson Robertson. Wilson was born in Mississippi in 1940 and moved to Pensacola when he was 24. He and his wife, Ann, have four children and seven grandchildren. Wilson established and operated a contracting and a real estate business in Pensacola since 1964.

Commissioner Robertson has been involved in Escambia County government for many years and brings a unique perspective from a small business viewpoint as well. His talk is entitled "Insight into County Government". Be sure to attend!

Business Expo Saturday, September 17th 9am - 4pm

Come and join us at The Pensacola Small Business Exchange's Business Expo this coming Saturday September 17th from 9 am til 4 pm at the Hampton Inn on Airport Blvd. Even kids with business ideas are welcome! A visit with Ken Parks

Today, I went to lunch with Ken Parks of Main Street Properties. Then we looked at a model home in the Maple Oaks subdivision by Henry Company Homes. The subdivision is just North of 10 Mile Road and East of Highway 29.



This was also an opportunity to showcase the resources of Youtube, Facebook and Blogger and how easily they can be used to further one's business.

Sheriff David Morgan presentation to Pensacola Biz Net

Veterans Dive Locker

Several weeks ago Dan Anderson gave our group a presentation on his program to help blind veterans scuba dive. It was quite a interesting presentation. Here is a little more on the subject. A video from their website Veterans Dive Locker.

Sheriff David Morgan speaks to Pensacola Biz Net - August 4th

Our Sheriff will be addressing us again. It's been a few years since he last visited and a great deal of things have changed... for the better! Sheriff Morgan will be talking about innovative things the Sheriff's office has done to reduce budgets, increase efficiency and deter crime all while bringing the community together and partnering with other offices to deliver more with less. Sheriff Morgan has used the team approach, given most of the credit of his success to the team of people around him. Quite an achievement and something that could be applied to business for sure.

It was an exceptional presentation! Even people who have lived in Pensacola and visited the Naval Aviation Museum many times learned some facinating new things. Speaker Announcement! June 30th - Captain Kevin Miller of the Naval Aviation Museum.

Retired Captain Kevin Miller will be addressing Pensacola BizNet on Thursday morning June 30th. He is currently the Exective Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. He will speaking about why it is important to visit our national treasure, the Naval Aviation Museum, especially this centennial year.  

He graduated from the University of Mississippi and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1983. He flew the A-7E Corsair II and FA-18 Hornet.

In 1998 he commanded the “Gunslingers” of Strike Fighter Squadron One Zero Five aboard USS ENTERPRISE, participating in combat operations Desert Fox and Southern Watch. He subsequently served in the Pentagon on the Navy’s Office of Legislative Affairs staff. After leaving the service he was employed as an associate at two Washington DC defense consulting firms.

Captain Miller earned a Master of Science in Business Management from Florida State University and a Master of National Security Policy and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. He has accumulated over 3,600 flight hours and 1,000 carrier landings from the decks of 11 aircraft carriers. His personal decorations include the Bronze Star, the Air Medal (with combat “V”), and two strike-flight Air Medals. He serves as Vice President for Legislative Affairs for the Tailhook Association, and lectures on the Battle of Midway.
